Random Name Picker

Randomly select names from a list for fair selection

Random Name Picker

Fairly select a winner, volunteer, or victim from a list. Whether you're running a raffle, picking a student in class, or deciding who buys lunch, this tool ensures a 100% unbiased result every time.

Classroom & Education

  • 🎓
Cold Calling: Remove the anxiety of "who goes next?" by letting the algorithm decide. Use the "Exclude previously selected" option to ensure every student participates once before repeats.
  • 👥
Group Formation: Shuffle the list to create random breakout groups or project partners instantly.

Office & Events

  • Giveaways: Transparently pick winners for Instagram/Twitter contests. Record your screen to prove fairness to your followers.
  • Daily Standup: Randomize the speaking order for your agile team meetings so no one is always stuck going first.
  • Icebreakers: Paste a list of fun questions instead of names to randomly pick a conversation starter.

How it Works

Behind the scenes, this tool uses the Fisher-Yates Shuffle algorithm. This is the gold standard for randomness in computer science.

The "Exclude" Feature

When you check "Exclude previously selected names," the tool essentially moves the winner to a "used" pile. They cannot be picked again until you hit Reset. This is mathematically equivalent to drawing names from a hat and not putting them back in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a limit to how many names I can add?
Technically, no. You can add hundreds of names. However, for lists larger than 1,000, basic browser performance might slow down slightly during the shuffle animation.
Can I paste a list from Excel?
Currently you have to add names one by one or comma-separated. We are working on a "Bulk Import" feature to allow pasting columns directly from spreadsheets.
